➩ Melancholia (2011)

Rating: ★★★★★☆

Another Lars von Trier movie, another complete surprise. In many ways, it’s still a conventional movie, but very well done. Say what you want about it, but I doubt that anyone who watches it in a group won’t talk about it at length once it’s over.

While Dogville (see my recent writeup) bore many similarities to a prose story, Melancholia has more in common with a narrative poem. It certainly tells a story, but you get the feeling much of what you see has metaphorical meaning rather than literal.
